Wood’s end grain

The romantic period in France corresponds to the rise of the image in the printed text. Illustrated books and magazines are multiplying, notably thanks to the innovation of engraving on the wood’s end grain The great advantage of xylography is that it can be printed at the same time as the text, and thus be able to mingle closely with it, rather than being relegated to the off-text of lithography for example. And this new way of engraving allows refinement, a smoothness in the line, close to the waist.
